Different Reality Capturing techniques are available for every price segment, from quick and easy solutions to professional surveying gear.
The data quality in the heritage sector is very inhomogenius and many sites are lacking of a professional survey.
Especially the 3D documentation of castle ruins is a blind spot of the scientific world and is often carried out by non-professionals with little surveying background.
Therefore, I started surveying castle ruins in my freetime in 2018. Not only because I have a personal interest in these medieval sites but I want to provide a solid data foundation for any kind of scientific investigations in the future.
Citizen science
Surveying a heritage site is a large effort: Starts with administrativ preparations, field work and finally data processing. Too much for one person to carry out in his freetime alone. Thankfully, quite a number of people share the ambition and have been helping in the field works and the surveys, which is the basic idea of citizen science. People often want to contribute in scientific processes, but missing the required background. However, with the proper supervision by an expert, it can be a Win-Win situation for all participants.
